VRT Calculator Ireland
Calculate the true cost of importing a car from the UK to Ireland — VRT, NOx levy, customs duty, VAT, shipping, and currency conversion. No surprises.
How VRT is calculated
VRT (Vehicle Registration Tax) is charged when a car is registered in Ireland. Revenue charges a percentage of the Open Market Selling Price (OMSP), set by the CO2 band, or the band’s minimum if greater, and adds a NOx charge. This calculator gives an estimate; Revenue works out the exact VRT when the car is presented for registration.
For every CO2 band, see the full 2026 VRT rate table and proposed Budget 2027 changes.

Worked example: VRT on a used car from the UK (estimate)
A petrol car run through the same engine as the calculator above. VRT is worked out on the euro OMSP, so the exchange rate doesn’t change it.
- Open Market Selling Price (OMSP)
- €20,000
- CO2 (WLTP)
- 118 g/km
- NOx
- 30 mg/km
- Fuel
- Petrol
- CO2 band
- 116–120 g/km (16%)
- 16% of the OMSP
- €3,200
- Band minimum charge
- €320
- CO2 charge (the greater of the two)
- €3,200
- NOx charge
- €150
- Estimated VRT
- €3,350
The percentage is higher than the band minimum, so the percentage applies.
This is an estimate for illustration. Revenue sets the OMSP and the final figure.
If the car comes from Great Britain, you must also make a Customs Declaration and pay VAT on the import value at the standard rate, plus Customs Duty where applicable, before you register it. Those aren’t included in this example.
Rates checked on revenue.ie on 31 October 2026. As of 31 October 2026, Budget 2027 announced VRT changes from 1 January 2027. They are not yet law; they are subject to the Finance Bill passing.

VRT is charged when a car is registered; motor tax is a separate, recurring charge. See the motor tax guide.
VRT questions
How is VRT calculated?
Revenue charges a percentage of the car’s Open Market Selling Price (OMSP), set by its CO2 band, or the band’s minimum charge if that is greater. A NOx charge is then added, except for fully electric cars. The worked example on this page shows each step.
Is this VRT calculator free, and is it Revenue’s official figure?
Yes, it is free and you don’t need to sign up. It gives an estimate, not Revenue’s figure. Revenue’s own VRT calculator on ROS also gives an estimate, and Revenue only works out the exact VRT when the car is presented for registration.
Do I pay VAT or customs duty on a car from the UK?
Since 1 January 2021 a car from Great Britain counts as an import from outside the EU, so you make a Customs Declaration and pay VAT on the import value, plus Customs Duty where applicable, before you register it. A car bought in Northern Ireland can be registered on payment of VRT, with no extra Customs Duty or import VAT, if it was imported into Northern Ireland under the Windsor Framework or was there before 1 January 2021 and stayed there.
When do I have to pay VRT after the car arrives?
Revenue says a car brought into Ireland must be registered within 30 days of arriving, and you pay VRT to register it. NCTS registers vehicles for Revenue. A car from Great Britain can be seized if its Customs Declaration isn’t completed or it isn’t registered within 30 days.
What is OMSP?
OMSP is the Open Market Selling Price, the value Revenue uses to calculate VRT. It is usually slightly different from the invoice price. This calculator estimates the OMSP, which is one reason its VRT figure is an estimate.
